When my granddad came back from the war

He said he’d work for another man’s gain no more

And he opened this little used tire store

Married a wife and start having kids

They named his first son after him

He said I’m going teach him everything my daddy never did

Profit’s slim and money’s tight

Reliable help is hard to find

His baby boy’s a man in the blink of an eye

Like his dad he found a girl

Took over managing the store

And had a son just like his father had before

Hands on the clock go round and round

Life goes on in a little town

Sooner or later you get worn down

Sooner or later you get worn down

I’m sure my daddy must’ve said

That when he was raising his own kids

He’d do things better than his daddy ever did

But i think about my granddad when

I see my dad look just like him

Or catch myself say something like he did

each morning when i turn the key

in the door of the store he left to me

it's like living out some ancient memory

and it's not just in this tired place

in the mirror at night I see his face

but life keeps spinning, even when the tread's long worn away

Hands on the clock go round and round

Life goes on in a little town

Sooner or later you get worn down

Sooner or later you get worn down

Son I’m sure that you can see

The apple fell right by the tree

But I always hoped that you’d get more from me

The way my dad and his dad hoped

But life doesn’t go like you want it to go

And though I can’t explain it, someday you will know

Hands on the clock go round and round

Life goes on in a little town

Sooner or later you get worn down

Sooner or later you get worn down
