Noah
When Noah was a young man
You could walk all night and never get beyond the lights of the city
And there was music
You could hear Jubal and his boys making noise any night of the week
And there was color all around
and more girls than a young man like Noah could count, looking pretty
Now it’s work all day
and quiet all night
and Noah sits alone
by the fire’s light
drinking the closest thing he’s found to whiskey
it’s tend to the crops
tend to the herd
watching his sons
try to plow the earth
wishing to drown in a glass of whiskey
When Noah was a young man
he spent his hours and his days and the years of strength planning for the rain to come
And he lost friendships
as he toiled in the sun while the soil dried up under his feet
Then there was trouble all around
and the friends who let him down wished they they could’ve found some of that grace of his
but now it’s cursed all day
and cry all night
and Noah sits alone
by the fire’s light
drinking the closest thing he’s found to whiskey
it’s make your own clothes
make your own tools
watching his grandkids
walk around with no shoes
wishing to drown in a glass of whiskey
Now when you’re feeling like young man
Think of Noah getting old in a home of the bones of the old days
And all of the mud there
And him knowing not a soul from life before that could treat him like a brother
I hope you’re in a world now that you’ve found
and that the sounds from the ground won't make the heavens rain down and flood you
but if it does build all day
and sleep all night
think about Noah
when you start to get tired
and see if you can find some whiskey
then pitch all day
and sleep all night
wait for all the animals
to form a line
And thank the Lord if you found some whiskey
